Please join the Smith Club of Great Britain for our annual Winter Dinner at the Sloane Club which this year will feature Smith Professor Rob Dorit speaking on:

A Guide for the Perplexed: Preparing for the Century of the Life Sciences

"The XXIst century will be, beyond any doubt, the century of the life sciences.  Discoveries over the last decade—and in decades to come—will have immediate and tangible impacts on all of our lives.  The nature of medicine, our notions of a reasonable life expectancy, our understanding of disease and risk, will all be recast before our eyes.  In this conversation, we will explore some of these developments and their political and ethical implications.  We will end by examining the role of colleges and universities as we prepare the next generations for this new world."

Rob Dorit is an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Biological Sciences at Smith College, and the current director of the JYA program in Paris.  He received his undergraduate  and MS. degrees in Human Biology and Environmental Engineering respectively at Stanford University, and his Ph.D from Harvard University.  A member of the Yale faculty for 11 years, he came to Smith in 2001.  His research interests include experimental evolution, the development of novel targeted antibiotics and the origin of new functions at the molecular level.  At Smith he teaches courses in molecular evolution, genetics, the biology and policy of breast cancer, and antibiotic resistance and design.  In addition to his specialist publications, his Marginalia column appears regularly in the American Scientist.

This is our signature annual event-- always great fun and an opportunity to meet up with old friends and make new ones, so hope to see you there!
